How Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Can Help in Cancer Treatment Processes
Sadly, the same cancer treatments that what will save a woman’s life may also have severe consequences for the rest of her life. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for late radiation tissue injury (LRTI)

A radiation injury or burn is damage to the skin or other tissue as an effect of radiation. (3)
This injury can be acute occurring within a few weeks of radiation, or can be chronic, producing varying degrees of damage to the skin and its underlying parts after a variable latent period of several months to several decades.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been used as a treatment modality to promote repair of radiation-induced vascular changes.
In a trial test, authored by P. Craighead, MBChB., M.A.Shea-Budgell, MSc., J. Nation, MD., R. Esmail, BSC MSC., A.W. Evans, MD., M. parliament, MD., T.K. Oliver, MD. and N.A. Hagen, MD., 140 patients suffering from LRTI received HBOT.
They showed that 4 years post HBOT, their tissue oxygenation was tested using transcutaneous oxygen to reveal near-normal O2 levels. This implies angiogenesis is essentially permanent. (4)
Another research article states, “Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been suggested as a treatment for LRTI based upon the ability to improve the blood supply to these tissues. It is postulated that HBOT may result in both healing of tissues and the prevention of problems following surgery. (5)
HBOT is both pain free and without side effects.The mechanism by which HBOT is thought to treat and repair radiation tissue injury is that it promotes radiation-induced vascular changes. Because of this, preoperative HBOT can contribute to a higher rate of surgical success.

Can Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Reduce Breast Cancer Treatment Related Lymphedema? A Pilot Study
This pilot study (7) authored by Jane Teas, Joan E. Cunningham, Lindsie Cone, Ken Jansen, Senthil K. Nitcheva, Dawen Xie, and William M. Butler was done with 10 healthy menopausal women between the ages of 58 and 62, suffering 9-18 years arm lymphedema. All 10 of these women were studied after breast cancer surgery and radiation. Seven of these women also had chemotherapy.
The results showed a reduction of 38% average hand lymphedema was observed at the end of HBO, independent of changes in body weight.
- HBOT reduces swelling while flooding the tissues with oxygen. The higher pressure in the chamber increases the amount of oxygen in the blood. HBOT aims to break the cycle of swelling, oxygen starvation, and tissue death.
- HBOT encourages the body’s oxygen radical scavengers to seek out the problem molecules and let healing continue.
- HBOT helps block the action of harmful bacteria and strengthens the body’s immune system. HBOT can disable toxins of certain bacteria. HBOT also increases oxygen concentration in the tissues further helping to resist infection. In addition, the therapy improves the ability of white blood cells to find and destroy invaders. (8)
